Aren't the clone troopers on the good side? And as Stormtroopers and such, Aren't we supposed to be on the bad side? This is all to confusing. I'm going to go add pink lace to my Stormtrooper armor and just be neutral. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

Now I have the answers to several questions, plus several new questions about the helmet mods:

My Answers:

Q: Why are the Clone troopers so dirty-looking already in EP II, when they are supposed to be 'brand-new'?

A: They just fiberglassed the insides of their helmets!

Mine is very 'distressed' looking now. I did the fiberglassing on our umbrella-covered patio table this afternoon. I avoided the full effect of the resin fumes, but I had put down several pieces of newspaper and the ink rubbed off on the outside of the helmet. Actually, it looks kind of cool. But that will all come off eventually when I finish the outside of the helmet.

Q: What do you mean by "messy", Joe?

A: Do the fiberglass and you will know.

I now understand the full extent of the meaning of "messy". I got most of it off of my arms and hands. It will be under my fingernails for a while.

I do like the feel of the helmet now that there is fiberglass inside. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Now for my questions:

1.) How much fiberglass did you put on?

I used almost an entire can. There are still a few thinner spots where the light almost shines through, but there are other spots where I couldn't get it to stay in a crevice without slathering it over the entire space.

2.) Can you sand the fiberglass smooth?

There are so many peaks and points and fibers sticking out. It is a mess! I used the long-strand fiberglass. Why did you recommend the long-strand fiberglass? Is the other stuff less messy? Is it as strong?

I am going to work on the outer 'patches' for the ear pieces and the fin next.

I will work on mine first for a while and then go back to Vince's. I bet I will figure out some things to make doing the second one easier.

View my resume. I have cut all of the patch pieces out of ABS and attached them.

Hmmmm. There are tons of seams that needed to be filled. THat Bondo Glazing & spot putty is pretty thin. And now I figured out why the 12" scale clone trooper figures have orange stuff on their boots and leg armor----

----they were walking around on my dining room table as I was filing and sanding the Bondo scratch-filler putty!

I had thought it was supposed to simulate the sand on Genosis.... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

View my resume. You can sand fiberglass, but wear a respirator to avoid any particles getting into your lungs. That can be bad. Oooo.... very bad.

Use a little resin in those hard to get at spots, just to strengthen it up.

–DarienVader SL1020"Fear is my ally."

one thing that is great for the inside, to go over the fiberglass, is pickup spray trunk liner, it will fill in and harden over the fiberglass. i got a can at pepboys for 5 bucks. Ill be bringing mine this sat to the nvidia event. I just finished painting it today. Hopefully by fri i can toss in the electronics.

""Traveling through hyper-space ain't like dusting crops, boy!"
""Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid."- Han Solo
TK669 website

We will have to check out the autoparts store in the suburbs tomorrow. We can't buy spray-cans in the city.

--I'll tag your garage door with pick-up truck liner! Sun ill paint the grey areas, and then clear coat it. So next sun i can wear it for the other gateway nvidia event. Ill still bring it tomorrow in case anyone wants to share ideas or see where im at with mine.

""Traveling through hyper-space ain't like dusting crops, boy!"
""Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid."- Han Solo
TK669 website

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub118.ezboard.com/utk669.showPu ... Hmmm. I sprayed a light coating of the trunk liner into the helmet, but it is taking it's own sweet time to do anything. (like harden or even dry)
There was not much guidance in the directions other than to shake it and hold it 10-12 inches away. There was lots of instructions as to what to do if you sprayed it into your eyes or ingested it, but nothing about the dying time or what temperatures it works best at. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ferent.gif ALT=":|">

View my resume. usually it takes about 24 hours or overnight to dry as ive found out, i would hit it with two or three coats to make sure you get all the spots. :) You can spray it as long as its above the 70's, if your doing it outside and its humid, it will take longer.

""Traveling through hyper-space ain't like dusting crops, boy!"
""Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid."- Han Solo
TK669 website

Thanks Kevin.
The coat I put on it yesterday afternoon is still a little tacky. I put on the 4th coat of primer very early this morning and it has had all day to settle (indoors in the AC)
I will start sanding this coat tonight.

The paint will be more tricky. It is very sensitive to the humidity. I remember that from painting my armor pieces last winter.

I painted my helmet during the fall/winter, and now I just wet sanded my vader again and am waiting for the right time to repaint. It was glossy in most of the areas, but there were some 'rough' looking patches. Humidity & heat is indeed the key element.
–DarienVader
SL1020
sing: "Peanut sat on a railroad track, his heart was all a flutter...
Around the bend, came number 10.... toot toot, peanut butter."

The paint is going to take a lot longer to dry than the primer, plus I want to apply it in several coats and sand (if necessary) between coats.
