IL- NORMAL/61761 - Relay 4 Life - Fri&Sat 6/21&22/13
The Midwest Garrisons Imperial Walkers had our best fundraising year yet. We reached Platinum level, teams have to raise between $7,500 - $9,999 in order to reach that level
The weather was hot but we had a nice breeze so it was great start for Relay. A strong thunderstorm with 1.03” of rain passed through around 3pm and Relay was halted for about an hour until the storm passed. We secured the campsite and several of us rode the storm out in our main tent. After it passed we set everything back up and trooped on. The storm apparently drove some teams away but the Midwest Garrison’s Imperial Walkers kept on.
The luminary ceremony went on as planned, except with glow sticks instead of the paper bags with candles around the track. Unfortunately the luminaries were placed around the track prior to the storm and didn’t make it.
The storm brought cooler weather to relay so we had a comfortable time trooping the evening / night. Saturday morning the heat and humidity were back though.
The 2013 McLean County Relay for Life was a success. It is still the number one Relay in the state of Illinois, one of the top 10 in the nation, and one of the top in the world.
The Imperial walkers were a huge hit as always posing for pictures with fans of all ages. We helped keep order at the closing of the silent auction & walking laps around the track. For the first time at this event we held a Blast the Trooper it was well received.
Our Team had 3 "Grand Club" members this year Barry Benecke TK523 ($2,809.30), Lisa Schneider TB4806 ($1,622.50) & Tom Durbin TX9293 ($1,060). Individual team members who raise over $1,000 for their team are recognized for their extraordinary effort.

I can't tell you enough what an awesome job you guys did in every way possible!
To everyone involved...huge kudos!
and now for the tough part...
can you estimate the amount of hours put in by everyone for this?
ballpark figure would be fine....

Re: IL- NORMAL/61761 - Relay 4 Life - Fri&Sat 6/21&22/13
I did a little "After the Relay" fundraiser and raised an additional $345.48, so closer to $9,000 for this years relay, and with a few more people offering to make a donation come payday.

I had a great time, despite having the storm blow through, we got to huddle under an easy up canopy with I think 15 Midwest Garrison troopers holding down our campsite!

I am also trying to get Wal-Mart to give our team a grant of $250 through the "Volunteerism Always Pays" program, I just need to get with a member of management to log in my hours I was out in front of Wal-Mart over 3 Sunday's doing fundraising.

Before I can finish the Charity Blog and report on this...
I need an estimate of the amount of hours that were put in...
I know you had some overnight...
some just on Saturday..
so...
just a "guesstimate" would be great...

Phyllis, does that include time spent fundraising, or only time at the "Relay" event?Schph Gochi wrote:Before I can finish the Charity Blog and report on this...

Re: IL- NORMAL/61761 - Relay 4 Life - Fri&Sat 6/21&22/13
Next year's Relay will be even bigger. In talking with some if the committee members, they want to try to incorporate our 10th year with McLean County's 20th year. Should be epic!
I just lost a friend this week to complications from melanoma......all the more reason to continue the fight! Thanks to everyone that showed up, weathered the storm (get it?? Even though some hid inside the school), and made this year another great year! Relay is very near and dear to me and I appreciate everyone's hard work! Can't wait for Relay 2014!

I would say all time spent for both fundraising AND for the event...
again..
it does not have to be super accurate because this is such a large event that covers two days and a certain amount of "coming and going"...
just a good guess would be sufficient..

Well, I did 25 hours of fundraising in front of my Wal-Mart
6/9 8 1/2 hours
6/16 8 1/2 hours
6/30 8 hours
And the event I was there for the full 24 hours
Any guesses on the rest Jeremy? I know 8 to 10 stayed the whole 24 hours

Sorry I didn't read this earlier. The original post has 551 hours reported. This is from the event as well as hours prior to the event gathering donations & captain meetings.
That was the total at the time of posting. It doesn't count Barry's (or other members) fundraising hours since the event.
I plan to update this thread around Sept 1 after Relay 2013 is officially closed with final hours & $ direct/indirect

Sweet! I was in panic mode, as I put in for a VAP grant, which if approved would give our team another $250. I wasn't sure if they closed the books on 2013 at the end of July. From what I hear, the Walton foundation has 90 days to approve an application, and they have been known to take a while to send out the check. I just got another $70.00 today. Sending checks in tomorrow
I won't hit 1000.00 but I'm going to clear 700.00
When I hit 700 that will put us over 9400.
