Wally's Astromech Build AKA "Marvinrobot's Robot"
My wife and I celebrated our 12th Wedding Anniversary this past Sunday and this is what my wife got me...
She told me I could build an R2...my oldest is super excited that his dad is building him an R2 unit. I spray painted it with gray primer so I could say I've officially started. Unfortunately, I leave on Friday so R2 will sit tight for the summer.

Sweet, I always wanted to see what the acrylics turned out. It is a true work of art! Now they just have to make it with 5 pie pannels so we can make r3's.Marvinrobot wrote:Sure is.R2-S5 wrote:BTW, is that a two layer dome?

Some updates on my R2 build and how I've been using my time off in VA...
Over the 4th of July, I snuck back home and finished painting the dome minus the pie panels:
Before I went back, my mother-in-law suggested I should use my free time away from the family to work on the R2 so it would be less time away from the family when I returned. So I listened to my mother-in-law and after I got back to VA, I started doing more research trying to figure out how I wanted to build R2 (what frame to use, skins etc) Well I finally decided togo with the A&A Frame (primarily because Andy Schwartz lives 3 hours from here so getting help while away was made easier). So I got the frame and marked it and washed it:
When I laid out all the parts I thought "what have I gotten myself into?" Well I dry fit together, remarked all the appropriate orientations and everything and then put it back together with wood screws, bolts, PVC glue, and reinforcing rods. Here is he finished work:
I guess you can say the frame has become my "Wilson"...

wow, it is a naked r2. Very cool.
If your interested in a set of legs send me a pm. I have a set of a&a legs that I bailed out of after half way building them. the only part that needs finishing is the ankles.
I figured an aluminum body shouldn't balance on pvc legs no matter how good andy and alex's design is.
ahh yes, and dont forget... out of Le Roy IL our slightly retired MWG member Dark Jedi Keith resides... he makes the best of the best resin greeblies for r2s.
