Welcome recruit. While I can't give you specifics because you didn't state what type of costume you're looking to build I can give you a few pointers right off the bat.
First. Be wary of ebay. That's not to say that everything on ebay is junk but in general any kits sold on ebay are likely recasted and poor quality.
Second. Ask questions and lots of them. We are here to help you.
Third. Do your research with whatever costume you decide to go with. There are always many ways to do different things, some are better than others, while some might be better for you than for someone else. Get ready for a lot of reading but the more preparation you put into it, the better experience you'll have in the long run.

As far as detailed instructions go, you would probably be best off getting tips on building here or in the various forums on detachment sites (clonetroopers.net, whitearmor, etc). Also finding troopers near you willing to help is an invaluable resource. If you are in or close enough to drive to the Joliet area, I am always willing to lend a hand, and if you are not, chances are there is someone close to you who can help

Welcome to the fight...definitely don't be shy about asking questions, we all went through the same issues when we started. Let us know what costume type interests you. Some are harder to build than others. You will also find varying price points depending on the maker. For sure though ask us before you buy because we may know something about the source you are unaware of...

Welcome aboard trooper,
we'd all really like to know what armor build you're looking for, and we can, if you'd like, match you up with another trooper whose already done the armor you're looking to do. please feel free to PM Myself, Whinter, or anyone for information. We are a helpful bunch. also whereabouts are you?
Lookin' forward to trooping with you soon!

this is unlike any forum i have ever been to! so helpful!
i had some issues with comcast so i was not able to get back to you guys sooner.
im looking at either stormtrooper or a sandtrooper. im thinking more sandtrooper (somthing about the pauldron just drags me in!)
im 6'1 bout 230ish
im located on the edge of schaumburg and streamwood (close to woodfield mall)
i have been reading up on a costume for about year and a half two years now. but i didnt think i would be able to build it my self, so i got the help of my dad but it was way out of our league. so i started reading more and more and sooner or later found my way here.

you're doing the research, that is a definite plus (as well as a good start).. I actually live only 10 min from Woodfield Mall myself so we're fairly close, now i've never done a TK/TD (Stormtrooper, Sandtrooper designation). But I know of about 2 or 3 troopers near your area that would be willing to lend a hand, if you'd like..
I've heard some people say it's easier to do the TK before a TD as it costs more and takes longer to do. I would recommend TK first then when you're ready, then do a TD.
But all in all the choice is yours.

i have been told that and read that a few times.. maybe i will do the stormtrooper then later on the sandtrooper. seeing as i have no real experience with this i think it would be best off to start slow.River wrote: I've heard some people say it's easier to do the TK before a TD as it costs more and takes longer to do. with the armor from "authenticorps" does anyone have any input on that?

Well its a set made from screen cast armor so its very accurate. The problem you're likely to run into with that is it will likely not fit you properly without a lot of extra work. You have to understand that the screen used armor was designed for short skinny guys. You should be able to make it work but you will have to shim (basically extensions) the heck out of it.nyquilpinches wrote:i have been told that and read that a few times.. maybe i will do the stormtrooper then later on the sandtrooper. seeing as i have no real experience with this i think it would be best off to start slow.River wrote: I've heard some people say it's easier to do the TK before a TD as it costs more and takes longer to do. FX while not the most accurate armor available is likely the best bet to fit you. I'm around your size and mine fits me more or less like a glove with little alteration, but that would really depend on how you carry your weight.
Another option would be RTmod armor which is also build for the bigger trooper and more accurate but also more expensive. That may be an option for you as well.
