Greetings -- new TIE Fighter Pilot landed in Midwest

Post by LordJohnWhorfin »

Greetings. I live in the Western Chicago suburbs. I have been working on a TIE Fighter Pilot outfit -- I already have most all the components. Just a couple more bits and I can formally apply for 501st ID. Actually, I have all the components for an Imperial officer, but I am holding out...

After my own outfit is complete, my next task will be to duplicate the components that I don't already have two of, and then my son will be the newest TIE Fighter Pilot in the Midwest... but that will take a little longer.

I live in Bartlett -- and I hope to be fully outfitted in time to join up with you all in the Bartlett Fourth of July parade. However, that also happens to be my daughter's birthday, so there is a high probability that I will be out of town. Time will tell.

A bit of background -- I have extensive experience in designing and making costumes and props. I also have over 20 years histoorical military reenacting experience (so that's a whole lot of additional clothing and accoutrements I made).

... But I made my first Star Wars costume in 1978. Here's a shot:

Welcome. Always glad to have another pilot around.
Very cool that you made that costume way back when. What did you make that helmet out of?

Helmet was vinyl -- parts were stuffed with foam rubber. The rest of the costume was vinyl and/or layered & reinforced cardboard.

I sold that costume to a die-hard Star Wars fan, then made another one which I wore to the theater opening weekend of Empire Strikes Back. I sold that one, too. Then three decades of no Star Wars outfits hanging in my closet. So sad.

I actually posted this story (with perhaps more detail) in the JRS Forum, along with updates regarding the assembly of my TIE outfit.

I have gotten pretty far with my TIE outfit ...

I already have in hand the following items:
-- Gloves/gauntlets
-- Boots
-- TIE Fighter helmet (2!)
-- Tubing (successfully attached to one helmet today)
-- Flightsuit
-- Comm Pad (scratch-built this weekend)
-- Belt (assembled yesterday)
-- Imperial Officer hat

Items on their way:
-- Chestbox
-- Code cylinders

In discussions to obtain:
-- Chest & back armor
-- Sterling L2A3 (sidearm; will be original, but non-firing, WWII gun)

Then, of course, a lot of stuff has to be tweaked... but I am almost there.

John Worfin my butt... this is one of my best buddies -- Jeff Wade!! I am glad he has finally been seduced by the dark side... all I have been talking about is my Imperial Crew impression! I think it got his SW juices going again!! I didn't even know the Tie Pilot was so far along!

Here we are, drunk as skunks at Reenactor Fest...

Still part of KAI. Actually, a bunch of Klingons were gathering together last night to go catch the new Trek movie, but something I ate yesterday decided to Rebel against the Intestinal Alliance.

Hanover Park is when I start walking toward the exit of my train. Howdy, neighbor.

Hi Mike.

Fancy meeting you here. I have been skulking around seeing how long it would take you to find me (ha ha!).

Let's be clear -- I got seduced by the Dark Side some 30 years ago (I refer to the first Stormtrooper costume I made). And Klingon is hardly Good Guy, right? And Batman is "The Dark Knight," no?

I actually imagined holding off until Dragon*Con and showing up in the TIE Pilot outfit just to impress the crap out of you, but when in private e-mail conversations with various 501st members (persuant to my pending membership) your name came up in passing, I figured that very few Bothan spies had to die to bring you the information.

Argh! You just sent me a text, and I forgot I changed my phone ringer to "TIE Fighter Flyby" -- it scared the hell out of the cats.

Nice running into you here.

Targ! Great seeing you here! I didn't recall that you were in the MWG -- Awesome!

Jody, there will be four of us at D*C, and I am trying to encourage Dave into obtaining some sort of Imperial gear. I planned to bring 23rd century Starfleet, but the addition of the TIE outfit (and Imperial crew member - already done) will give me the option to switch universes. And on that specific note, I have another costuming idea in mind, but this one I am keeping close to the chest.

While I dearly love my Klingon and Batman outfits, I think I am going to shelf these until Cyphan. They are better suited for a local convention (and EVERYONE always wants to party with Batman).
