Hiiiiii Everybody!!

Post by panthro13 »

Hello-

New to the forums and new to costuming

I've been wanting to join up with the 501st since way back at Celebration 2, but I could never seem to find the time and/or resources to put the work into making an acceptable costume.

I live in the Western Suburbs of Chicago, so I at least have access to all the joys and resources of the big city

I'd REALLY like to be a stormtrooper or a scout, but I was wondering if it's possible to wear glasses under the bucket. Sadly, my eyesight is such that contacts aren't too fun and going without specs at all isn't possible.

Otherwise, being an officer is my next choice.

I'm a bigtime noob at all of this, but I'm fairly net saavy and definitely eager to get going. I'd appreciate any and all help that you seasoned vets could give me.

Thanks a bunch!

My husband wears glasses but has not been able to under his helmet. He is considering contacts just for costuming and also tinkering around with attaching an old pair of lenses to the inside of his trooper lenses. But for now, he just moves slowly and makes use of his other senses to make sure he doesn't hurt himself or others.
The helmets severely limit your vision anyway, LOL! Everyone walks around a lil' blinded

If you live in Bartlett, you should check us out on July 8th - we'll be there for the 4th of July parade!

I've worn my glasses under my scout bucket a few times. There's space there, though I wouldn't recommend letting the face plate slam down...ouch.

Welcome :D Be sure and check out the armory section of this board.

A couple ideas for corrected vision while trooping.

1. Contact your eyedoctor and ask for an updated Rx for lenses that would sit 1.5 - 2 inches from your eyes, the go to 39dollareyeglasses and order a pair to canabalize.

2. Go to a SCUBA shop and see what they have for dive masks with replaceable Rx lenses, then just buy the lens or lenses. Some masks have one large lens and some have a lens for each eye.

While my vision isn't bad enought that I have to wear contects or glasses while trooping, I do love my dive mask with corrected lenses.

You must know of a different type of dive shop than the several that I buy my stuff from, every dive shop I have ever done bussiness with needs a perscription from a eye doctor and sends them out to have the lenses bonded into the mask...that is done at the same place that makes the lenses...so the mask still goes to an eyeglass shop to have the lenses installed....Dive shops that I know of cant legally do it,unless they have a lisenced optometrist/optomoligist on site...

However I CAN wear my glasses in all my costumes,Vader Trooper and Tie...The Tie is the only one that I wear them in because of the air movement...My Vader and Trooper helmets cause the glasses to fog bad...that doesn't happen in the Tie cause of the air movement....

I might suggest you go black, TIE Pilot black that is. Some of the newer fan made helmets out today are the size of the "Holy Grail" of TIE Helmets the Don Post Classic Action and will easily allow for you to wear your glasses.

Another idea is something that is sometimes issued in the military as gas mask inserts or "combat" glasses. Glasses with elastic headbands that sit tight on your face. Military Surplus catalogs usually have them or I'm sure you could google them. Also regular gas mask inserts are usually lenses with frame arms that are meant to lock into the gas mask lens frame, perhaps you could design your helmet to accept these inserts, or mod an old set of frames like the previous poster suggested.

The dive shops locally just sell them. My mask has interchangable lenses, so if my Rx ever changes I just go buy the new right or left lens and pop it in.

Looks like a wide array of answers. Guess I'll just have to try a bucket on and see how it works. I've got the double whammy of a massive head the size of a small moon...or a space station  Plus I've got thick glasses due to my -12 prescription. :(

Thanks for the input everyone. Looking more and more like an officer is the way to go.

Panthro, I'm probably in the same boat as you (head circumference about 24", and bad eyesight). I wear contacts myself (-9.5, -8.0), but the FX Stormtrooper helmet is generally large enough to fit a keg, a buffet bar, and your head :)

I've since upgraded my FX to the more movie-accurate RT (which barely fits my head and wouldn't if I wore glasses more often), but the FX -- because of its much larger size -- might fit the bill for ya.

We should make you march with us :P

At the end of the parade route we have usually have a picnic area setup (next to the carnival). If you have time, it'd be a great chance to meet a lot of us at once.

Just use some of the extra ABS plastic that comes with your kit and make little shims
to push back the point where your helmet liner's front clips attach I've worn my glasses in my bucket before with no problem...except for fogging up, but that can be overcome with a little Rain-X anti fogger
(but let it dry before you put them on, some people have a reaction to the fumes otherwise) :D .

If you need more details on the shim-thing PM me and I'll send you some photos or something. :D

Very true, they also make perscription safety glasses that wrap like that for for factory work and such.

Looking forward to meeting some of you Sunday. I'll probably be wearing a Star Wars shirt of some kind and my Chicago Blackhawks cap. :P
