Re: Static Box Pre-Sale!
Got mine in the mail today too! Thanks again. Is there a wiring diagram somewhere for this?
"Open the blast doors, open the blast doors!"

Re: Wire up
I got my static box and it looks great! I'm having trouble with my mic though. I know you said the mic makes a big difference and the battery power. The battery is new and the mic is out of a non-powered, handheld from Radio Shack. When I connect everything (mic, static box, amp and speakers) I get sound, but no static burst. It does make the static burst when I plug the mic into it and it (the static box) is turned on. Hopefully, your mic will fix this. Any idea when the mic's will ship out?

Thanks,
Chip
"I can't see a thing in this helmet!"

You could try speaking abruptly (start/stop) into the mic and see if that works just for kicks, but the when I find a mic that works your problems should be over.

To be honest I have been dragging my feet in regards to the mics, been too busy working the day job.

I did sit down tonight and wrote up an order and will place in tomorrow and I will hopefully have a mic that works well by this weekend in this shipment and can ship them out very shortly. I will probaby order extras with this order and hope that one actually works and I can ship without another order. Shipping/handling/min order charges make it a big pain to keep trying different parts

If you want to keep experimenting and have a mic on your computer you can unplug it from the computer and plug that into the unit and give it a try, it will probably be a little too sensitive and create a lot of feedback but it should trigger the static burst quite well. I believe the best results are going to be with electrolytic mic, they are the small (very small) little aluminum capsules, very common in most modern electronics. Older style dynamic mics don't seem to respond as well, these are the mics that resemble speakers (and sometimes are) in that they have a thin film and magnet. I tested several dynamic mics of different varieties and was unable to get the static burst, so my guess is that is the type of mic you are playing with currently.

I have been having pretty good luck with the mic in the "wiring" picture above not perfect but the best I have found, although it is part of a bootleg binaural mic set I built for recording live music shows (with the bands permission of course ) The problem with that mic is that it is a little to sensitive as expected for it's intended use, and also VERY small, about 3/16" round. But, I have sourced some simular ones that are in the 1/2" round range and that is what I will be ordering.

There are still quite a few unfilled presale orders, so if you are one of them and didn't get the email please contact me.

Flynn
exoray@exoray.com

Re: mics
I am having the same problem as 9965. The unit transmits but no static. I have figured out that it is because it is registering in the unit as always "live" and transmitting. Since it is never sensing the end of the transmission, it is never triggering the static burst. Maybe there could be a way to add sensitivity adjustment in future units, so they could be adjusted to other mics.
Jim - TK159
....................................................................................

"Did you feel a great disturbance in the force?
Quote:
I have figured out that it is because it is registering in the unit as always "live" and transmitting.

That is exactly what the problem is with some mics the high(sound)/low(silence) shift isn't sharp enough to trigger the static.

Quote:
Maybe there could be a way to add sensitivity adjustment in future units, so they could be adjusted to other mics.

When I do my complete own design there certainly will be some adjustment for sensitivity. But these current units are a pretty much 1 for 1 clone of the GT model, and any inherent issues are carried over from the original units. This is the reason I want to find a mic that works and ship it with the units to help resolve this one issue. I know that the units work well with some of the mics I have tested so it should not be a problem getting one that is suitable. Hopefully I will have something soon, also because of this problem I am holding back offering up the unit to the "public"

Sorry to hear people are having problems with the mic/unit combination but rest assured that with the right mic the unit will perform pretty well. I saw in the aerator speaker thread that someone said they just added in the static box and it sounds good so someone it having luck.

Re: mics
The same goes for me. i have the unidirectonal mic (for micro cass.)I was told the orig. static box wont work with my new mic as well, but the mic that came with it ,is a good working mic if that helps

Thanks TK 585 MIDWEST GARRISON

Re: mics
I tried the computer mic as you suggested and it triggers the static burst well. Like you said though, the mic is too sensitive and it causes too much feedback. Anyway, my static box works fine.

Chip
"I can't see a thing in this helmet!"

Flynn,
Any idea when we'll get the mics? Weekend after next is Wizard World and I'd like to use the static box for it.

Thanks,
chip
"I can't see a thing in this helmet!"

I would love to say that they were ready to ship but the ones I just tested, although better were not as good as I would have liked them. I was going to order several more and do a last check before deciding on one, but I am leaving for Canada this weekend for a short vacation and will have to wait till I get back to test the new ones. Two weeks should be enough time to get them out, so everyone should have them by then.

Sorry again about the delay again but I want to find the best mic I can.

Flynn

Re: .
I've been trying to find a place to put the static box in my helmet, any recommendations? Pictures of where and how you've attached yours?
"Open the blast doors, open the blast doors!"

I have not 100% finished my armor let alone my helmet

I was thinking in the very back/lower part of the helmet, or even above the hard hat liner if there is enough room. I have read some sites that say if you put in on a side you have to counter balance it or the helmet tilts.

Re: .
I had even considered placing it under my chest armor, but then I would have to have the wire from the static box to the amp, and the wire for the microphone both running up into the helmet. I think I'll try something with some velcro to temporarily mount it into my helmet. I plan on replacing the foam that holds my bucket in place after Wizard World.
"Open the blast doors, open the blast doors!"
