Hey, there! Just catching up with you. I'm now ID-1062 in the 501st thanks to your great instructions. My photo on the website reflects that I didn't get the neck just right on the first try. It's going to be fixed soon. Just surfing the net and ran into your pages again. I'll be making another in green next. Thanks again for your great help. I'll keep an eye out for you at DragonCon.

Maria

The number of code cylinders determines your rank. The more cylinders, the higher the rank.

Re: Imperial Scanning Tech

Post by TKvanB »

I received an email from SL-2255 of Garrison Titan's and Cloud City Squad requesting my information on making the Imperial officer's hat and the other parts of the costume that would also work for this costume:

SL2255 said:

Quote:
I was discussing this with a couple of members of my group, and I suggested this. I know some people who would like to be part of the group but either can't afford the armor, or just want to help out (ala spotters etc) and I thought it would be nifty if we could figure out a low cost uniform that could be done rather well, and would make them visually part of the group. What I came up with was this.

1 light grey jumpsuit (rough cost $40.00)
2 Silver Imperial Cog patches (Cost unknown)
1 wide black belt (You could probably put this together for under $15.00)
1 pair black boots (anywhere from $25-55 I would imagine)
1 black imperial cap (again I have no clue as to what the cost would be.)

What you'd basically have is a low cost "Imperial Scanning Tech" and would give a kind of low cost uniformity/recognizability(is this a real word???) to all of the Imperial helpers.

That is such a great idea!

Also:

Quote:
It looks like they also have data cylinders on their sleeve similar to what X-Wing pilots have.

This is what I found:

Try this: <a href="http://www.allseasonsuniforms.com/be02a ... for coveralls. They are available in grey as well.

I found my Imperial cog embroidered patches in the dealer's room at DragonCon last year. I knew I should have picked up at least one more. I bought 3. I sewed 2 onto my leather jacket that I wear everyday.
The third one is really waiting for the 4th one now to go on this costume!
I will definitely pick up an other if I ever see them for sale again!
I have seen some Imperial cog patches that have with white stitching. These ones that I found have a silver/grey. They would be perfect for this! I don't know the name of the dealer from which I bought the patches, however, he dealt strictly in embroidered patched of ALL kinds. The patches were about $4-5 each, as I recall.

I can't tell what kind of boots those technicians are wearing. The kind of boots I use for my regular Imperial officer's unifom, black riding boots, might not look right on a laborer. Maybe some one could find more pictures to confirm what style footwear is appropriate.
If I were designing the costume for the movie and I considered what these characters do, I would suggest a black workboot, but any picture confirmation would settle that.

The belt looks to be the same as the officer's uniform belt, but with a few utility pouches of some kind.
I described how I made my low-tech version of the belt & greeblie in this thread.

The hat information is in a separate thread.

Fashion cognoscenti throughout the universe agree;
White IS the new black this year.

www.geocities.com/tkvanb/

The Brazilian Website for the 501st is selling the entire Officers suite for $180.00 USC!! I wanted to know how accurate these suites are? ww ...
Look under costumes for sale. Tell me what you guys think because I am interested in purchasing.

IMHO, I'd save the money and buy a sewing machine & fabric. It doesn't look like it fits that well and bunches up at the sides.

Well.

Vinicius Ayres - ID-194 is using the pattern modifications and hat pattern and instructions that I designed to make this costume. He asked me for the info. I sent it to him.
This is information I give away freely to whom ever contacts me so they can make their own costume.

Everyone has different skill levels. This project may be more difficult for some people to construct. The most important aspect of making this whole costume however is the fit.
It is a very fitted costume, the jacket, the pants and the hat. It is definitely not a one-size-fits-all.

Yes. I could make a $35 hat too. But it is not going to look like any hat that I have ever traded, sold or given to any one. I have a lot of pride in every costume piece that I make. I personally would be much too embarrassed to let a sub-standard costume piece out into the world. I know admirers will ask the origin of a piece. If my name should be attached to it, I will settle for no less that a prideful recommendation from any one who is wearing something I made. I can't make a hat that is up to my standards and sell it for $35. I put waaaaaaaaaay too much time into each hat, and I would let anyone have one of mine unless I am satified that the fit is correct.

I see people at conventions wearing officer's costumes. I will often engage in conversation with them. Many times they are folks who have received my patterns and instructions for the modifications on line. I emailed it all to these folks and I am interested in how they constructed the costume. I have had many conversations where folks have asked me how to fix or change something they made.
The costumes these folks have made aren't usually done as I would have made, but what matters the most to me is that these folks tried to make it themselves and did it. That is the true satisfaction of making something like this, even though it doesn't turn out 'screen-accurate' or have a perfect fit. At least you tried and that means a lot to me. Anyone who doesn't sew very much is really going to have to sharpen their skills just to complete the costume. There are also a few techniques that many people have never employed in simple sewing projects. This is a learning project for most people.
It gives me great satisfaction to know that I have inspired others to learn some new skills in their quest to wear the uniform of an officer in the Imperial Forces. I am not going to diss your costume's flaws if I know you put a lot of time and effort into making it. Ever.

Yes, the prices on his site sure are low, but from the looks of his pictures, the quality and construction certainly aren't up to what I would let anyone walk out my door wearing. Ever.

The old adage, "You get what you pay for" should be strongly considered.

If this costume were quick, cheap and easy to make, you would certainly see many, many, many more Imperial Officers joining the 501st. But you don't. That ought to tell you something.

I was going to see what Kathy had to say about the uniforms...

I have begun one of these myself...and after looking at countless websites and countless examples of this costume that have been done, the one thing I figured out was that fit was pretty much everything...and since I am a complete novice at sewing, I have enlisted the aid of a tailor for this costume.

I am moving forward...but seemingly slowly...I have the boots, belt, hat, code cylinders and am almost done with the rank insignia...the tailor has taken my measurements and has the fabric and instrutions...I have my fingers crossed...

I would have loved to have you do the costume Kathy, but know you are way too busy already...but....if this one don't work out right....I will be knocking at your door!
