Paint talk
I have looked around here and I haven't seen a thread with this discussion.

What kind of paint did you use? Did it work? What kind of paint should I avoid?
Did you use the paint that the directions suggested? Where did you find it?

I feel like I have wasted the whole day looking for a little paint to paint the 5 white pieces of the armor that need to be either grey or black. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

The armor instructions suggest a very specific brand , Rustoleum, and a specific color, hardhat grey, or something like that and the instructions say that this paint is an epoxy enamel.

I asked at the hardware store. Nope. There was Rustoleum, but not exactly either of the specific suggested paints.
I did buy some steel wool to sand the parts. I found more washers in the quest for the perfect washer-greeblies.
I walked down the street to the hobby store.
I had a long talk about paint with the nice old guy in the hobby store. I asked him what the difference was between 'epoxy' paint and the regular testors that he sells in little cans there. He told me. Epoxies by definition are a two-part substance. I have used epoxy adheasives before.....very messy,....very smelly.
I also know that regular craft and/or model paints cause some types of plastic to warp.

I thought this was going to be the simple part. Get the paint today. Paint the parts today and put something together today. But no. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ferent.gif ALT=":|">

Remember, you can't buy spraypaint in Chicago. I have to make a half-day expedition of it.

I wasted my whole day looking for paint.
I did not wrap any presents. I didn't even clear a space to work on the armor. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ferent.gif ALT=":|"> Now the rest of my "free-time" (24hours) will be spent with relatives. Maybe there will be a hardware store nearby. I can go look for paint while the food is cooking.
And then it is back to the crappy grindstone again. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ferent.gif ALT=":|">
I would have time to work on armor on Christmas day, but not if I don't have the paint.

<img src=http://www.geocities.com/tkvanb/sandtrp ... .gif>I GOT ARMOR!!!!!<img src=http://www.geocities.com/tkvanb/sandtrp ... gif>
<a href=http://www.wizards.com/starwars/celebra ... onII>C U @ C II

So it does exist.
I will be driving up to Wisconsin today.
Maybe I will find some there.

If not, did anyone use anything different?

Re: Paint talk
Vince needs to run some errands and go to a different hobby store tomorrow. I will send him out with this information.

Thanks.

Re: Paint talk
I used Testors. My armor didn't come with instructions. I also used clamps when gluing, which I understand is frowned upon according to the "instructions". Maybe my suit isn't really ABS... ("The Emperor's New Clothes" comes to mind...)

Vince was successful.

I just painted my pieces.
I painted a belt too and now I am kinda woozy. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

Re: Paint talk
The belt (from an other costume) is done. It turned out great! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

However, the armor pieces are still kinda tacky this morning.
Maybe because it is cold on the basement floor.
I carefully peeled the pieces up and brought them upstairs where it is warmer.
I guess it's a good thing that I have to go to work today, because I can feel myself becoming anxious to put this together.
I need to get a more heavy-duty glue gun too.

I put the airator thingies together last night.
Is there supposed to be a little white plastic showing on the insides? They have some tape goo on the outsides too. I will get the goo off the sides at work before I put the black stickers on.

Re: Paint talk
TKvanB, did you use a sandable primer on it first or just a coat of paint? I'd recommend using a fine grit sand paper (1200) between coats of paint and wipe it off with a tack cloth just before painting. Make sure that you moisten the sand paper first and don't sand the final coat. Use thin coats of spray paint and finish it off with a coat of Clear Finish (gloss or matte, it's up to you)... Oh yeah, don't sand that last color coat either because you will see those under the Clear Finish. Wish I was here earlier to help on this.

–DarienVader"Fear is my ally."

Re: Paint talk
You might want to skip the stickers on the aerators. Just use the steelwool on them and shoot with the black hardhat paint. It will look and last better. We will be removing them in the future to put speakers in them.

Primer?! Ha! We don't need no stinkin' primer. This paint wil adhere to teflon! No kidding this stuff is great, just a bit of steel wool will do the trick. All I did to mine was to wash the pieces in dishwashing liquid and dry them before painting. That was 4 years ago and they have never needed a touchup yet.

Aargh! The paint is still tacky this morning. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\">
Well, I am not going to be glueing any of the small peices on right away.
I did get me a craftsman heavy-duty glue gun.
Chrissakes, there are also about a hundred different kinds of glue stick to put in that too! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">
I got the all-purpose superior bonding super glue.
Will that work?

Re: Paint talk
The Craftsman 'super glue'
glue stick is some pretty good stuff.

Though I'm too late... I painted the gray onto the ear pieces and frown, with Testors paint.
White and gray, mixed to the same shade as on the decals.

Re: Paint talk
What kind of paint did you use TK669?

Since I did this painting of the armor pieces, I have also painted my blaster.

I used a paint given to me by TK737 called Rust-Oleum "textured" finish, black.
It worked very, very well. I first primed the blaster with a white primer and then sprayed this on in about 4 super-fine coats. I used my silver Testors paint marker (those are illegal too in the city) to hit some of the highlights and spaces on the blaster. Then it dry. Then I sprayed a super-fine coat over the silver.
It looks like a new weapon, but then my armor looks like I am fresh-out-of-the box too.
With time, I will become a more weathered and distressed trooper.

I GOT ARMOR!!
Fashion cognoscenti throughout the universe agree;
White IS the new black this year.
<a href=http://www.wizards.com/starwars/celebra ... onII>C U @ C II

Re: Paint talk
I know one hardware store that has spray paint in the city, the Ace hardware just west of Milwaukee on Western. But, they gave me the bums rush out the door when I asked to buy some. I obviously look just like the kind of person who would turn around and tag their building.
I asked them why they have all of that spray paint then, if they can't sell it. He said that they have it for the police.

I felt like finding a police officer/trooper and going back there and having the cop tell the hardwarestore guy that I was not a hoodlum and that I only needed the spray paint to paint prop replicas and costume pieces....and prop weapons, sell me the spray paint.....and then I would come back there late at night and spray an Imperial cogg symbol on the hardwarestore.

Paint markers are much more dangerous that spraypaint. They are small and quiet.......................

I know, I feel like such a criminal spraypainting plastic toy guns in my basement..........

I GOT ARMOR!!
Fashion cognoscenti throughout the universe agree;
White IS the new black this year.
<a href=http://www.wizards.com/starwars/celebra ... onII>C U @ C II

Re: Paint talk
painting armor plates and toy guns is really harmful to society kathy. we're both going to end up on COPS if we arent careful.

"I can't be 100% responsible for what comes out of my brain"
