IL-Peoria Lakeview Museum Meteor Shower Golf Ball Drop

Post by Dirty Scout »

On Saturday May 30th, 2009 members of the Midwest Garrison came from far and wide to help the Lakeview Museum and Planetarium of Peoria, Illinois celebrate its Second Annual Meteor Shower Golf Ball Drop.
The event was held on May 30 from 11-4 p.m. at the Museum! It was a fundraiser for the operating costs of Lakeview Museum.

It was a family-oriented day, with face painting, balloon making, Fun on the Run games, a miniature golf course, and a performance by Waterstreet (a local band) all on the back lawn. And it was here on the back lawn of the museum that we gathered for photos and met guests of the museum. Some troopers even participated in showing their ability to hit (or not hit) a target with their golf swings.

Jim and Emily worked in the sun tattooing children and answering questions about our organization. Eventually we got a canopy to help ease the heat from the sun on this lovely Saturday in the Park. The temperature by 1:00 was a beautiful 87 degrees.

The main attraction of the day was the golf ball drop, which occurred around 2:00 PM . Individuals bought golf balls which were flown up in a helicopter above the front lawn of the museum. A solar system was painted on the front lawn, and the balls that landed closest to the sun won various prizes. This year there was a special feature where it was possible for a person to win a car if all the stars aligned and their ball landed by “the black hole”.

Throughout the day the museum staff showcased the Museum by having planetarium shows, art & science projects, and making the gallery accessible for the guests.

Members of the Midwest Garrison posed for photos with families and children of all ages.
