MSABC Donation Station - ALGONQUIN, IL 9/25/10
EVENT: MSABC Donation Station - Algonquin, IL
DATE: Saturday, September 25, 2010
10:00am - 1:00pm
EVENT COORDINATOR: Cheryl "Whinter" Whitaker
Fantastic Troop!! Great weather! Fantastic Team!
We set up our "MSABC Donation Station" and suited up at the Jewel/Osco on Randall Road in Algonquin, IL just before 10:00 am.
Neil's wife, Andrea, was our HERO and a HUGE help at the event. She stepped in last minute and did an absolutely fantastic job with running the table AND being our costume support! She even got in on the fun and wore Princess Leia "buns"!
Neil was in his Stormtrooper and his son, Gehrig, was in his Jawa; af fantastic team, as always.
Another last minute addition to our event was our soon to be MWG "newbie" Vader, John (jweger77). He did a terrific job and will make a great addition to the Garrison. He stayed up until 4:30 this morning, trying to get a few things finished up before his big debut. Great job, John!
And Neil was happy to know that he wasn't going to have to worry about being taller than Vader; John is 6'8" (7' in costume).
And where did that leave me? VERY vertically challenged!
My neice, Hailey, was also a big help with everything. She was my little photographer, as well as costume support and helped Andrea at the table. She also helped me with making the posters and the chocolate we gave out as a thank you to those who donated. I foresee a great for her in the 501st. (but she has another 8 years before that can happen)
So, the total today........... An outstanding $232.00!!! [smilie=yahoovk3.gif]
$49.00 of that came from Phyllis's Jedi Costume Raffle!!!! AWESOME!
We also collected TWO donations from Jewel patrons that were $25 each, and will each receive a personalized 501st/RL Team Armband in Honor of their loved ones that have been affected by Breast Cancer. I already gave the information to Phyllis and she is making them tomorrow for us to wear at the MSABC walk on 10/17 in Aurora.
I guess it's time to schedule the date for next year's Donation Station. I had to schedule this one at the Jewel about 6 months ago to get this date! Great spot to do this. Anyone ready to sign up for next year's station?

OHMIGOD!
You guys did AWESOME!
We will have to get Andrea to make a costume to go with those buns...
I have a pattern....
Neil and Gehrig....awesome as always!
and...our new Vader...
WOW....he will be a GREAT addition!
BTW....Cheryl...the pink of the flightsuit looks fine.....
just pink enough!
Thank you to the entire team!
I can only hope we do half as well at the Mokena Donation Station this coming Saturday...
I have also been making homemade jams and jellies (combinations and fruit you can't buy in a store) to raffle off at the Will County Master Gardener's Pot Luck on Tuesday...
I usually do pretty well...the Master Gardeners are very generous...
Our team is kicking butt....and taking names!
Maybe this year we can fend off the last minute surge from "Theresa's Trotters" team....lol..
Regardless of final outcome...
we have done ourselves very proud...
Everyone has done a fantastic job for a fantastic charity!

Thank you Cheryl for setting up this event and doing everything she did even while her mother was in the hospital. What a trooper. Thanks to John for helping out too. He makes for an awesome Vader and can't wait for him to become official. Thanks to my wife and son for helping out. It was nice to know someone was watching over the money bucket. I'll post pix a little later. I'm ready to sign up for next years.

Thanks again to both Cheryl and Neil for getting me off my butt to get things pretty well wrapped up on the Vader. Now that I've had a chance to look at some pics, I can see a few things I need to address...mostly placement of things; including the chest box which seemed to be wonky in every pic almost! Good thing is that most of it is minor...though the cod is a little too tall and I can see I need to cut it down some more. Always more to do, but I had an excellent time and a lot of fun.
I will certainly be back for more and just need to wrap up a few things and send those submission pics in. It's been a long road on this one...especially since the majority of everything was self made. I have a great appreciation for the time and effort which everyone puts in to their armor and costumes. Anyways, get those pics up Neil and thanks again!
Here's one to add that was taken by some friends who stopped by..

I have a pattern....
.
you are talking the iconic costume she wore during most of "A New Hope" right?
and...
yes...
I do have a pattern...
and know what the fabric of choice is..
and I also have a tutorial on how to make the belt...
and I might even have some of the belt metal pieces cut out and laying around here somewhere...you just have to sand the sharp edges and polish them up...
Will try to remember to bring it all to MSABC....
you can borrow the pattern....
but I would like it back...

Wow! Thank you! Yes, she wants the white outfit at the begining of A New Hope. (Most of the movie really) She wants the material to be thicker so no see thru and to be warm. Cheryl said she may have extra marterial or we can just try to copy what she has. We'd return the pattern to you of course. Thanks again.Schph Gochi wrote:by Leia robe...TK3446 wrote:Phyllis- I might have to take you up on that pattern. The fabric used by most of the Princess Leia's is Jet Set..
but..
I think I remember hearing that the fabric was discontinued.
Jet Set was a fabric that was commonly used in swimwear and active wear...
If Cheryl has some...that would be cool...
but you need a pretty good quantity of fabric...
let me check around and see what the substitute for Jet Set is...
here is an interesting discussion:

Andrea just wants a costume for fun too. She would only wear it at Halloween or something like the donation station. I'm sure she can find something at a fabric store. Finding the pattern was going to be the hard part but Phyllis has one.Whinter wrote:Neil - I would go with the fabric choices Phyllis is talking about. The fabric I used for Hailey's costume was just a satin material for fun.

One thing I will tell you...
is that the satin costume fabric might be cheaper...
but it is REALLY hard to work with...slipping all over..
and frays like crazy..
it has no "give"
also...
most of the time..
it is 100% polyester..
which is HOT....(kinda like wearing a plastic bag...because polyester is plastic)
those are things you really want to take into consideration when looking at fabric..

She wants it thicker but we'll see. You're totally right about satin material and I'm sure she'll stay away from that. My guess is some kind of a cotton blend if possible.Schph Gochi wrote:One thing I will tell you...

I'll forward the link to my wife. I love the sample they show on the site. Just a plain white box. LOL! The funny thing is at the Jewel we were at for the donation station there is a JoAnn fabric at the other end of the plaza. I told her to go over if we were slow at our booth. Great news is she never had a chance to go to the store.Schph Gochi wrote:a cotton interlock knit would be GREAT...
