3/3/10 - Aurora, IL - Krug Elementary School Visit

Post by Arcturus1020 »

This was an unscheduled event because it came up so quickly that I only had a day or two to prepare for it. The urban youth organization, Triple Threat Mentoring approached me to visit a school with them as they presented an 8 week class they're offering the kids called "Urban Renaissance" which will instruct the students in a totally different approach to what art is, and what it looks like to each kid. No art is wrong. There are no limitations. Very abstract thinking is involved, and it's something I wish I was taught first instead of what art normally looks like.

I was there as "art". How an artist thought about color, texture, and emotion when creating the image of Darth Vader. How the mask looks like a skull which represents death, as does the color black. How texture comes into play like the reflective nature of the paint, down to the leather, and to the textures in the cape and surcoat. They went on to how an artist designed the shoes they wear, their clothes, the desk, the chair, etc. It started to sound a little "Yoda" after a bit, but the kids reaction to this thinking really made them take pause.

In any case, I visited 4 different classrooms and in each class they were all quite in awe. I just hope they heard what they were offering the kids and not so dumbstruck by my presence. A good time. Some photos from today (the first photo is actually kinda funny because the two guys with their iPhones were sending out Tweets on this):

Looks like it was a good troop, Jim! And some very good points raised about design and the emotions that art can evoke, even subconsciously.
Nice. :)

Awesome. I like this organization already as this sounds like a perfect fit for my philosophies on art.
