Autism Awareness/Acceptance Bake Sale – Hoffman Estates, IL
Conant High School hosted a HUGE cupcake event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27th, at the high school in Hoffman Estates, IL to raise money for the Conant High School Special Olympics, Cougars in Need and local Autism support and resource agencies.
There were so many different hand-decorated cupcakes of all flavors for sale. You could pick out any cupcake that you wanted for $2 each, or $20 for a dozen. They also had Cupcake Candles for sale, food/drinks, a Cupcake decorating contest, Gift Baskets, free face and nail-painting for the kids, live music and much more. It was a really nice event, with even nicer volunteers.
We arrived to find a line of cars at the front door of the school, with about a dozen volunteers helping to unload all the delicious homemade cupcakes those cars were dropping off for the sale. It was a very efficient assembly line of sorts. We followed one of the volunteers into the school and were led directly to the gymnasium, which had a giant cupcake display in the middle, surrounded by tables and tables full of cupcakes! I have never seen so many cupcakes at one time!
After suiting up in the coach’s locker room, we made our entrance back into the gymnasium, and immediately caused a stir of attention. We walked around and took photos with the kids (and big kids) and even danced to the music that the school’s orchestra/band was playing. They were very good. That was also when we found out that we had inadvertently recruited a very cute little 2-year old fan named Katie. She was a little firecracker that kept a very close eye on all of us, making sure that if one of us strayed to take a photo with another fan or just walked away for a moment, she was going to go after that trooper and lead him or her back to the group! And if we tried to take a group photo with someone, she wanted to be a part of it too! She was very serious about it and we made sure to pay close attention to her! LOL! However, once it was time for us to go, she was very good about it and gave us all hugs. She was adorable.
Before we suited down, our contact told us to make sure we came back into the gym afterwards and help ourselves to some pizza/salad that they had for all the volunteers. We really couldn’t smell it when we had our helmets on, but after we suited down and walked back into the gymnasium, we were overwhelmed with the smell of sugar! No wonder everyone had so much energy! Just the smell alone would’ve been enough to keep you going! After we had some pizza, we went back to say our good-byes and were told to pick out a dozen cupcakes for ourselves as a thank you. They were so generous. It never ceases to amaze me all the wonderful, generous people that we meet with this hobby, not to mention all the fun we have!
We picked out our cupcakes, said our thank yous and goodbyes, and then headed out to our next troop of the day…..C2E2!
Thank you again to all of you that came out to troop this event!
