Clone helmet mods to kellog helmet. PICS ADDED!

Post by TK171 »

ANyone doing this?

I am.

heres a list of whats needed for conversion.
1. TIME
2. can of Bondo Fiberglass long strand mix or
can of Resin, and bag of shredded fiberglass.
3. paint brush and/or putty knife/spatula if using the premix.
4. Bondo glazing putty.
5. sheet of styrene or sintra.
6. metal sheet or non porious thing to mix on.
7. time and effort..
8. Crazee glue, or Zap-a-gap CA+ glue and accelorant.

here ya go. ( should have pics soon)
Keep in mind this is what "I" did..

1. glued the 2 halfs of the helmet together with
z-a-g. I spaced it out bigger to allow room for the fiberglass. Basically its angled out from the top.
the top is put together close to where it should go, and the bottom angles out, so the lines on the side of the helmet have one additional showing.( the indented black lines) If you space it out so the last indent fits in the groove of another showing one additional, you should be golden.

2. I cut the round holes in the frown with an exacto knife to make more squarish.

3.(premix version) On the metal/ glass etc. mixing sheet, glob out the resin premix onto it. Mix in the hardening cream and mix it up well. ( only do alittle at a time, as it sets up fairly fast).
once mixed, glob it into the helmet, and spread it out with the putty knife or spatula.

repeat this process in small amounts til the whole inside of the helmet is covered with fiberglass. Should set up in 20 mins to be really hard, and give the cheapo mask a good feel to it. Like a real helmet!! I loved that feeling once done.

3. ( sep mix version) add resin with a paint brush to the inside of the helmet. pull out strands of fiberglass and lay over the resin. add more resin mix over the top so it the fiberglass is saturated with the mix.

4. add the bondo glazing putty down the seams where the 2 halfs come together in small amounts, and smooth out. Once dried, sand it down flush, and repeat til there is no lines visable.
I also added the putty into one of the indented holes ( black lines) at bottom edge, so you get rid of the extra one added when spacing the helmet out bigger.

5. Cut sintra or stryene fin to more accurate shape.
putty it to make solid, and attach that either over exisiting fin, or cut it off and replace it all together.
leave room for Lights if you are going to add that.

6. putty helmet fin seams around top of helmet, Dry and sand flush.

7. remove the lense from helmet.

8. Once all completed, lightly sand, or use soft scrubb padd to light rough up surface of full helmet.

8. Paint white, and or add colored stripes if you want. ( 2-3 nice soft coats)

9. paint black brow trim

10. paint gloss over top.

11. Lightly used rubbing compound over gloss to shin it up.

12. re attach lense..

13 ( options)
1. add lights and red transparent lens to back fin of helmet.
2. add more sintra or styrene to bottom lip of helmet to bring bottom in towards your neck and lip it back down.( do this before painting!!)
3. add helmet liner of some sort so fiberglass doesn't itch your face.
3. add hard hat liner, or foam to get custom fit.

Lotta work? Yup!
go quick? well, I have most of mine done already.
and it looks boobies..

pics shortly... hope this helps.

Joe
Tk171

JoeTK171Commander
Central Garrison 501st
<img src=http://students.mcad.edu/wwilbrand/asse ... rsmall.gif border="0">
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub118.ezboard.com/utk171.showPu ... So far, all I have done is cut the 'foot' off the two halves of the helmets and attached a foam block to the top of the helmet with two pieces of duct tape.
Time spent, one minute.
I used my 'crappy' scissors to cut the excess plastic.
Most difficult part of the operation was tearing off the pieces of duct tape. WARNING -- don't try this at home!

Seriously.
We are going to do some more work with these helmets soon.

whatta ya need Kathy?

Bondo Fiberglass can be purchased at just about any automotive stores, or like a home depot, fleet farm etc....

2 different kinds. I used a can that was a premix of the fiberglass strands and resin gook.

I couldnt for the life of me find the bags of separate strands of fiberglass.

if possible, buy the can of resin and a separate bag of glass strands...

paint the inside with the resin, lay the strands all over the inside, and add more resin on top to saturate then.

the stuff I got is kinda hard to spread around on the inside, and you have to do alittle at a time, or it sets up and you can't spread it around.

the other stuff to fill in the seams can be found in the same area as the fiberglass.
bondo glazing putty. just add thin, sand, reapply etc.... once its hardened, you can prime and paint.

JoeTK171Commander
Central Garrison 501st
<img src=http://students.mcad.edu/wwilbrand/asse ... rsmall.gif border="0">

is it just me, or does the mohawk/crest on top of the helmet not line up with the center of the visor? maybe the angle of the pic is just bad....

I'll have to look again when I get home, but never noticed that.

I think its probably just the angle of the pic.

the lense was taken out, so with it just dark on the inside, I'm sure its just the pic playing tricks on your eyes...
JoeTK171Commander
Central Garrison 501st
<img src=http://students.mcad.edu/wwilbrand/asse ... rsmall.gif border="0">
