IL-MSI-Christmas Around World "Volunteer Thank You"
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
When we were asked to troop this event, I wasn't really sure what the event was all about and was thrilled to learn that we were actually an added bonus to the "Thank You" dinner for all of the volunteers who decorated the Christmas trees for the "Christmas Around The World" exhibit.
This exhibit started in the 1940's during WW II and started with 12 trees of countries that were fighting the war as a way to bring the cultures together.
Many of the volunteers wore costumes from their native land and made the dinner extra festive. We had several groups tell us that we "made their families night" by being there.....you can't get much better than that.
We were a small group....
SL1719 - Jason Patterson - Darth Vader
TI3127 - Cheryl Whitaker - Tie Pilot - RL/TJA
TK9989 - Kathy Van Beuningen - Stormtrooper
TK1951 - Phyllis Schulte - Jedi - RL/TJA

It's cold in the Midwestern United States this time of year, but the spirit of the season is warm, fueled by Star Wars fans and by organizations who join them in celebrating with Star Wars style.
The Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago created a Star Wars tree as part of their 66th annual "Christmas Around the World" exhibit. Concurrently, the Museum is also hosting the Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination exhibit.
"I think they made the tree especially for us," says Kathy Van Beuningen, Commanding Officer of the Midwest Garrison. The Garrison have been actively volunteering at the museum in conjunction with the "Science Meets Imagination" show. Van Beuningen reports that there are more than 50 decorated trees in the holiday exhibit.

Members of the Garrison were also invited to troop at the thank you dinner November 20 for all the volunteers who decorated the trees. "This exhibit started in the 1940s during World War II," writes Schulte, "and started with twelve trees of countries that were fighting the war. It was seen as a way to bring the cultures together."
