IL-NORMAL-Relay for Life-JUNE 26-27, 2009

Post by BDA TK7503 »

The weather was a little hot but the humidity was low so it was great day/ night/ day for trooping, the 2009 McLean County Relay for Life was a huge success. It is the largest Relay in the state of Illinois and one of the top in the nation. In 2008 the McLean Co Relay was one of the top fundraising Relay's in the US with $560,035.00 raised, the goal for 2008 was $580,000 they surpassed it with having raised $602,581.68 at the end of the Relay.

The Midwest Garrisons Imperial Walkers were able to raise $2,797.14 by the end of the Relay (final total will be availible Sept 1, waiting for matching funds). Our own Barry Benecke TK523 has made the grand club again this year. Individual team members who raise over $1,000 for their team are recognized for their extrodinary effort.

The Imperial walkers were a huge hit as always posing for pictures with fans of all ages. We helped keep order at the closing of the silent auction & walking laps around the track.

The Luminaria ceremony had both sides of the track as well as 3 extra rows in the end filled with remembrance Luminaria's.

There were 157 teams this year and aprox 1,800 registered walkers.

Our Team members consisted of
Jeremy Wilcox TK7503 ***stormtrooper
Chip Childress TK9965 ***Vader
Barry Benecke TK523***tusken raider
Kent Heath TK1692***tusken raider
Ryan Summers TK2429*** stormtrooper
Tom Durbin TK-9293***stormtrooper
Kevin E Kemarly TK-3290***stormtrooper
Mark C Berry BH4265***Boba Fett
James Noland IC7696***Tie Pilot

Robin Benecke***Imperial photographer / handler
Natasha Harrison***Imperial photographer / handler
Eric Harrison***Jedi
Kyle Rummel***stormtrooper
Nicole Wilcox***Imperial photographer

I took care of the registration fee for next years Relay. Hope to see you June 25 - 26, 2010

Thanks to everyone who donated to our team as well as those who came out.

With the eleven people in costume Friday, this has to be our best Relay ever!

If you saw Fanboys, you might have gotten all of the references. A good time as always, except for the sleeping. I will never forget a sleeping bag again. And then there was the Michael Jackson Billie Jean (tribute?) at 3:30 AM blasting over the speakers!

Overall a good time. Got to meet some new potential members too.

Yes, it was a great turnout, a lot of kids as well as parents. When I was out of costume, I overheard people saying "Did you see the Star Wars guys" Made me feel good, what made me feel better was getting close to $2,800.00 in donations by the team this year!

I just sent my friend an e-mail. She usually donates, and I wanted to let her know that you can still make a donation until the end of August before they close the books on this years event.

I would like to thank Jeremy again for making it possible for us to do this again this year, as well as next year, and prior years as he pays the fee upfront for our team, so the only thing we need to do is raise the donation for the American Cancer Society, and show up to entertain the crowd. Some of us are there also because cancer has taken a loved one from us, or has touched us in one way or another.

If you don't participate in a "relay" event, at least make an effort to go hang out at one, especially during the luminara event. It's very moving.

The fundraising for 2009 ended yesterday.

Our Team officially raised Imperial Walkers $2,857.17

Barry Benecke TK523 personally raised $1,657.07 for our team.

Thanks to all who participated / donated.

I have paid for the 2010 team registration, i have signed the team up on the web site for 2010 but we can't add people till official team sign up on Sept 22 at 6pm cst. I was the first to register the team and 3 others slipped through before it was announced that team registration doesn't start till 9/22.

I will start a new thread at that time for the 2010 relay

Cheers
