What started in 2010 with about a dozen troops and 300 visitors grew to about 85 costumed troops and 5,000 visitors in 2013. The first event in 2010 was started to get kids into the library and discover what it had to offer and emphasized the joy of reading.

What started in 2010 contained within the Joliet Public Library grew to 3 buildings and a street in 2013.
In 2013 we occupied:
The Joliet Public Library
The Joliet Historical Museum
The Joliet City Center
Clinton Street

In 2013 we had artists:
Dave Dorman
Mikey Babinski
Steve Palanica
Janine Jender
Jim Tampa
Jimmy Hasse

We had Klingons and their music:
Illinois Troubador Klingon Music Project

We had Jedi Swordsman give a stage demonstration:

We even had Orli Shoshan who played Shaak Ti in "The Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith"

We had Clones:

We had Mandos:

We had Jedi:

and just about any costume you ever wanted to see.
To all of our costumed volunteers and all they represent, my most sincere thanks for the miles you drove, the hours you sweated, and all of the work you put in.

Our participants: (roughly in order of sign up)

There were many heros of the day and I am sure that I don't know all of the stories as I was tied up with a lot of duties all day.
I would like to for sure thank all of those who signed up to volunteer to sit at the displays and also to act as Drill Sargeants and Targets. Also to those that didn't sign up but hustled to fill in as needed.

As one of the organizers I have a couple of personal heros that I would like to thank.

My thanks go to Steve Szyndrowksi for his steady hand in getting the Star Wars Academy game launched and over the bumpy roads that it encountered.

Image

Thanks to Nicole VanBrooker for her steady hand in assisting, learning the Drill Sargeant, and helping iron out some set up difficulties with SWA.
Image

Thanks to Kathy Van Beuningen for hauling and setting up her doll display at the Joliet Historical Museum, her Padme' outfits, and her Imperial display items....that is a LOT of hauling Kathy!

Image

And to this man:
Bradley Miller from Rantoul IL - Bradley is working on his TK costume and on a moments notice he came up and worked all day hauling, setting up, loading nerf guns for SWA, and helped break down the entire event. He worked tirelessly all day with a smile on his face.

Image

Hats off also go to Dave Klima who got into a car accident 3 blocks away from the event, totaled his car, but was picked up by a couple fellow MWG members and he then proceeded to suit up into TK and troop all day....
now that is a real Iron Man!

After the event was broken down, it was time to party! The Joliet Historical Museum lent our group their rooftop party room for our after party and donated beverages. To show our thanks, we donated $160.00 to their project to restore one of the original road markers for Lincoln Highway.

It was a brilliant event, Phyllis. Absolutely brilliant! :D

I honestly haven't had that much fun at a troop in I-don't-know-how-long. And it wasn't just the event itself, with the thousands of fans who showed up, but the real sense of comraderie and fellowship that trooping with that many fellow 501st members (and folks representing sister clubs) from such diverse locations and different backgrounds. And even from the farther reaches of our own territory. I got to sit down and talk with several people that I haven't had the chance to in a long time, and with people that I've spoken to more on-line or on the phone than in person. I got to catch up with old friends that I haven't seen in ages and share hearty laughs with brand new friends that I'd never met before.

I don't think that there is any Library Day event anywhere in the world that is bigger and better than the Joliet Library Star Wars Day, and I couldn't be prouder that it happens in the Midwest Garrison and to have simply been a part of such a phenomenal event.

This day was about the Library, but it was just as much about us, and I think every single one of the 90+ members who were there had as much fun, if not more, than the people who came to see us.

I can't thank you enough, Phyllis and Jody, for putting together "Star Wars Celebration: Joliet." I wouldn't miss this for anything!
Best. Troop. Ever. :D

This is hands down the best mission report I've ever read. I'm also NSB but that's just minutia. Seriously awesome job!
Many bothans died to bring you this post...the tearing of ligaments and almost the loss of a TK's finger...

Jody and Phyllis, amazing job!!! This event never ceases to amaze me every year with not only the turn out of costumers but the amazing displays our membership puts together. This year was fantastic, I walked around the library in awe under my helmet! It is very clear how much pre-planning and coordination has gone into this event. It was not only a great experience for the attendees, it was a blast to troop, and the after party was one of the most fun times I've had as a member of the MWG.

And Phyllis, great mission report write-up!!
