MWG Inducts C. Andrew Nelson as Honorary Member
Several members of the MWG made it out to Madison, Wisconsin November 18th-20th for FilmCon5. Like most conventions, FilmCon offers science-fiction enthusiasts a chance to meet their favorite actors, participate in costume contests, and socialize with other fans. An added bonus for conventioners this year was the chance to play Battle Front II on a big screen courtesy of the convention's sponsor, Play Station. However, unlike most cons, FilmCon offers individuals a chance to learn more about the media aspect of the television and film industry. With various panels and programs, FilmCon appeals to individuals who are interested in learning more about art/film production or making a movie. One of the featured guests was C. Andrew Nelson, a graphic artist for LFL. He is also known for his portrayal for Lucas Film Ltd. as Darth Vader. Nelson first met the members of the MWG at a Halloween Trade Show last winter when he sent to be the designated Vader for the event. At 6'5", his presence as Vader was "most impressive"! Recently in September, members met and hung out with Nelson at Itasca's Chicagoland Collectors Expo. After getting to know the gentleman, there was no doubt he was one of us! On Saturday, members of the MWG proudly presented to Nelson Honorary Membership into the MWG. More important than the hearty handshake and plaque, Nelson knows he has a group to hang out with should his adventures bring him back to the Midwest. Photo courtesy of TK-737posted by Rome

John Williams Conducts Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Neither rain nor hail nor sleet nor snow could keep members of the Midwest Garrison from Chicago on Saturday November 25th. Battling snowstorms and fighting holiday traffic were just a few of the obstacles these troopers faced. However, the excitement that ran through the crowd was enough to warm up everyone! Imagine the faces of the bustling holiday shoppers when they saw a 6 foot TIE Pilot waving in a snowstorm. Or Biker Scouts having a mock snowball fight! And thanks to the popularity of camera phones, many passer-byers were able to capture the moment! For those not familiar with John Williams, he is credited to changing the film and music industry with the return of symphonic music to the big screen. Luckily for everyone, Williams and Spielberg teamed up in 1974. This lead to the introduction of George Lucas and Williams. In 1977, Williams composed the music for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and the rest is history. The theme of the evening was " Friday Night at the Movies" which covered pieces from over 80 movies. The orchestra played pieces ranging from the 1984/1988/1996 Olympic games, the Suite from Jane Eyre to more well-known pieces including excerpts from Psycho, King Kong, Jaws, Robin Hood, and Superman. What really concluded a great evening was the encore of several Star Wars pieces! It was a Friday night at the orchestra hall for these troopers and a wonderful time was had by all.
